Frequently asked questions

When is the hunting season ?

Hunting is conducted throughout the year. The more popular months are from March to October. November through February are our hotter months and also the peak raining season.

What to bring and temperatures ?

Our daytime temperatures are generally warm throughout the year. However, night time temperatures cool down considerably during our winter months from May to August. Be sure to bring a jacket for the early mornings and evenings.

Here is a simplified list of must brings :

  • 2 hunting shirts (preferable olive green, brown or camo)
  • 2 sets of hunting trousers
  • Warm hunting jacket
  • Comfortable, well-worn hunting shoes
  • A set of comfortable clothes and footwear for around camp
  • Binoculars
  • Camera
  • Sunglasses
  • Hat
  • Personal effects and medications

Laundry and ironing are done on a daily bases, so there’s no need to bring  vast amounts of clothes.

Please note :

Cat hunters are urged to bring soft, comfortable, silent fleece type clothing specifically for the blind. Silence is everything on these hunts.

We supply soft cases for the rifles as they are a bulky item to bring with.

What calibre rifle for my hunt ?

On Big 5 hunts we recommend a minimum of 375 calibre. Premium quality bullets are essential. The most powerful rifle in the world is useless with bad quality ammo.

For plains game hunting we recommend any of the 30 calibres – 30 -06, 300 win mag  etc. One again, use good quality bullets.

Bringing rifles into South Africa

Bringing rifles into the country and clearing them with customs and the local police does take some paper work.

We strongly suggest that you make use of a professional service provider for these purposes.

We can recommend  "Hunters permits".  You can visit their website at:

A representative from "Hunters Permits" will meet you at arrivals at the airport and personally escort you through the red tape with pre-approved import permits in hand. They will also help you connect to your next flight to camp.

Rifle Hire

An assortment of rifles are available for rent at the following rates :

30-06 & 308 @ $ 50 per day
375 & 458 @ $ 75 per day
500 NE @ $ 100 per day

Rates exclude ammo which is charged at local replacement cost.

Where do I fly into?

Hunters need to fly into Johannesburg (OR Tambo International ). Here you will go through immigration and clear customs (also your rifles).  From Johannesburg you will embark on a 1 hour flight to the little town of Hoedspruit (Eastgate Airport) close to Kruger Park. There are 2 scheduled flights per day.  Upon arrival you will be met by a Shumba Safaris representative and taken to camp, only 40 minutes away.

Trophy handling

Your trophies are skinned , salted and tagged by our experienced skinners. After a drying out period the trophies are transported to “ Life Form Taxidermy “ - for “Dip and ship“, raw preparation export or further trophy preparation by them. They are experts in their field and will make sure that your trophies are safely handled and legally exported in accordance to the import regulations of your country.
